The Indian civil service administers the entire administration of the country, and India's elected ministers set the guidelines needed to properly manage the administrative apparatus, which is then carried out by officials from various central government agencies.

The civil servants employed by the Indian government will be recruited as part of the Civil Services Examination carried out by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It enables the recruitment of candidates from different backgrounds, such as students, teachers, doctors, lawyers and engineers. These officials are selected through a series of tests lasting at least three years from the application date.

• Central Civil Services - the Engineering Services Examination of UPSC and the Combined Graduate Level Examination of SSC
