Lexicography can be divided into two groups.

Practical lexicography is the art of compiling, writing and editing dictionaries; theoretical lexicography is the study of dictionary components and structures that link the data in a dictionary and how users can best access the data contained in a printed or electronic dictionary, as well as the design of the dictionary components. It is sometimes called metalexicography

What Lexicographers do?

• Check and proofread the text.

• Compile new and review the existing definitions in strict accordance with agreed protocols.

• Write advertising copy about specific titles for catalogues and brochures.

• Identify the new words that are in common usage for inclusion in the dictionary.

What are the skills required?

• The lexicographer should have the ability to apply grammar correctly and identify cases of incorrect use, as well as the knowledge of the correct use of words.

• You should be able to describe complex issues in a few words, but you also have the ability to identify errors and discrepancies in presentation style.

• English-speaking lexicographers should have a good understanding of how English is used in other English-speaking countries and how important it is to learn English.

• Lexicography is essentially a collaborative process; topics are continually discussed with other editors, both formally and informally, and ideas are exchanged.

• You have to concentrate and work well on your own; you have to constantly discuss questions with others, whether formal or informal, with the publishers of the publisher you are learning with and working with.

• In addition, not only do you have access to the knowledge and skills needed to find mistakes, identify discrepancies between presentation styles, etc., but your skills must be learned and edited by the publisher.

• India is a very linguistically diverse country with so many languages written and spoken. Niche sectors like Lexicography will have plenty of opportunities available.

• After Master’s, you can opt for NET/JRF and choose a career in academics or research.

• State and Union governments too intermittently release job opportunities for lexicographers

Samuel Johnson Jr. was the author of the first English dictionary compiled by an American. It was printed in New Haven by Edward O'Brien. Martha Jane Gibson considers Johnson Jr. as America's first lexicographer.
