Who is a Policy Maker?

A policymaker is someone who creates ideas and plans, especially those carried out by a business or government.

It is generally made for the development of the underdeveloped. It is made by the state for the welfare of citizens’. It comprises political decisions and implementation for the accomplishment of goals and welfare of the society.

The objectives of these policies narrate about the plans and actions such as, what will be the achievement, who will be benefitted by the policy and what are the steps that need to be taken for their accomplishment

What do policymakers do?

Many policies may need an ongoing function or action. A purchasing policy could specify the need for a purchasing office. This would facilitate purchase requisitions and ongoing promotions. Policy statements must specify:

• Specific Rules

• Requirements

• Changes in organizational behaviour created by the policy.

Policy statements vary depending on organization, form and intent.

A statement of applicability and scope must be prepared. That describes who is affected by the policy and what actions are affected by the policy. It may explicitly exclude certain persons, organizations or actions. The policy focuses only on the desired objectives and avoids unintended consequences.

Policymakers are affected by many different factors that are not considered. This includes

• budget constraints

• public opinion

• political parties

• values and ideologies

• mass media

• interest groups

• events

• social and economic conditions

• research

The effects of policies are often indirect, diffuse, and take some time to appear. Given the complexity of the problems, policies are not measurable and attributable. The government has been trying to improve the use of evidence in policymaking.

Policymakers value experience and expertise as early childhood educators and allies.

They value their constituents who vote them into ( or out of ) office.

From members of the field, they receive critical insight on the policy's impact.

How to be a good & ethical policymaker?

Policymakers need to ensure that scientists spend time researching issues that have the greatest potential to improve society. They should fund synthetic research and impact assessments to support policymaking. The trick is to combine science with politics and politics with science.

Political decision-makers respect this standard for the quality of services. Scientific literature helps to widen the sphere of influence of politics. Successful and unsuccessful experiences in policymaking should be published in scientific journals. It makes policies available for critical review and reference. Society will benefit if researchers and policymakers are held more accountable.

In this sense, one could say that scientists and policymakers are not equal partners. When making political decisions, the judgment is uncertain and not always scientific. The challenge for scientists is to not only to convince policy-makers but also people.
