What is the Difference?

They Are Different Things

DNS Sponsorship and IMU-CET are not competing options. They are two separate requirements that often work together.

• IMU-CET is a national entrance exam conducted by Indian Maritime University. It is required for admission to most maritime training institutes in India.
• DNS Sponsorship is a commitment from a shipping company to provide sea-time training and a job. Companies conduct their own separate selection tests for this.

Most DNS Sponsorship programmes require you to have sat IMU-CET in addition to their own selection test. So you typically need to clear both.

IMU-CET — The National Exam

IMU-CET is a gateway exam to maritime institutes. It is mandatory for IMU campuses and accepted by most major private institutes. A strong IMU-CET rank (like AIR 5, AIR 10, AIR 23 — which are 9CC results) gives you access to the best institutes and strengthens your sponsorship applications.

IMU-CET 2026: Application deadline 24 April 2026, exam date 24 May 2026, fee ₹1,200.

DNS Sponsorship Test — The Company Test

Separately, each company (Maersk, Anglo Eastern, MSC, Fleet Management) runs its own selection process — written test, psychometric, and interview. Clearing this is what gets you the sponsorship commitment and guaranteed job. This test is designed by the company, not by IMU, and 9CC coaches specifically for these company tests.

Do I Need Both?

For DNS Sponsorship — yes, most programmes require both IMU-CET (to gain institute admission) and the company's own selection test (to get the sponsorship). 9CC's coaching covers preparation for both in one programme.
