The Core Difference

Both DNS and B.Sc Nautical Science lead to the same destination — becoming a Deck Officer and eventually Captain of a ship. The difference is how you get there and what you carry with you.

DNS (1 Year)
✓ Fastest route to sea
✓ Sponsored job guaranteed
✓ Lower total cost
✗ Sponsorship mandatory
✗ No degree certificate
✗ Limited company options
B.Sc Nautical Science (3 Years)
✓ Academic degree
✓ More company options
✓ Sponsorship not mandatory
✗ Longer duration
✗ Higher total cost
✗ No guaranteed job

DNS — The Fast Track

DNS is a 1-year diploma followed by 18 months of sea-time training as a Deck Cadet. Because DNS requires pre-sponsorship, a shipping company like Maersk, Anglo Eastern, MSC or Fleet Management confirms your job before you begin. You clear their selection test, join the DNS programme, complete it, and sail with them — typically within 2.5 years of starting.

9CC's Super 90 batch is specifically designed for DNS Sponsorship — our June 2026 batch targets the January 2027 exam, with June 2027 as the second window. In 6 years, every 9CC student has cleared within their batch cycle.

B.Sc Nautical Science — The Degree Route

B.Sc Nautical Science is a 3-year degree followed by 12 months of sea-time as a Deck Cadet, leading to the same Third Officer role. It opens more company options since sponsorship is preferred but not mandatory. Companies offering B.Sc sponsorship include Maersk and V.Ships. Cost is significantly higher than DNS.

9CC's Recommendation

If you can clear the sponsorship test — which 9CC prepares you for — DNS is the better choice. You get to sea faster, your job is confirmed before you start, and the cost is lower. The degree adds flexibility later in life, but at sea, what matters is your Certificate of Competency — which both routes provide on the same timeline.

Career Progression — Same for Both

Deck Cadet$450/month
3rd Officer$2,800/month
2nd Officer$4,500/month
Chief Officer$8,000/month
Captain$10,000+/month

All earnings are tax-free USD. The career path and salary are identical whichever route you choose. Both require the same DGS Certificate of Competency examinations to progress through ranks.

Which One Can 9CC Help You With?
