Deck Side vs Engine Side — Which is Right for You?

The Two Departments

Every merchant ship has two departments. The Deck Department handles navigation, cargo operations, and ship management — the path leads to Captain. The Engine Department handles propulsion, machinery, and technical systems — the path leads to Chief Engineer. Both are essential, both are equally prestigious, and both earn the same senior-level salary.

Choose Deck Side If

• Your eyesight is 6/6 unaided in both eyes (no glasses)
• You are not colour blind
• You want to get to sea in 2–2.5 years (DNS route)
• You prefer navigation, weather, ports, and ship management
• You want a company to commit your job before you start training

Choose Engine Side If

• You wear glasses or have colour blindness
• You enjoy mechanical systems, engineering, problem-solving
• You are comfortable with a 4-year course duration
• You want a degree certificate alongside your maritime qualification
• Your Physics and Maths are particularly strong

Our coaching covers both. DNS Sponsorship preparation for Deck side and IMU-CET / B.Tech Marine Engineering preparation for Engine side. One batch — two paths. Our IIT faculty cover Physics, Chemistry and Maths at the level required for both.
